John Ngumi: Ex-Safaricom Chair Resigns from Kenya Airways Board

Former Safaricom board chairman John Ngumi has quit his role at the Kenya Airways (KQ) board.

Ngumi, who was the chair of the KQ board audit and risk committee, tendered his definition, acknowledging his role in the airline's transformation.

He noted that his work has begun bearing fruits, and it was time for others to lead the airline's transformation.

My departure is motivated by my belief that now the tough work of stabilising KQ is starting to bear fruit, it is the right time for others to come in and build on the transformational platform that the Board and Management of KQ has created,” Ngumi said in a KQ notice.

The banker expressed confidence in Kenya Airways' strategic management and its economic importance to Kenya, adding the national airline was worthy and deserving of the critical and invaluable government support.

KQ acknowledges John Ngumi's role

KQ said Ngumi joined the board in June 2019 and has been significant in transforming it through the waves of COVID-19 and other challenges.

"Ngumi has been associated with KQ since its inception in 1977 as the airline's banker and financial advisor. "He was elected to the board in 2019, at a time the national carrier was facing server financial problems," said KQ

The board picked James Kabeberi to replace Ngumi as the chair of the audit and risk committee.

Ngumi resigns from Safaricom board

This followed Ngumi's exit from the Safaricom board five months after his appointment.

Safaricom appointed the banker as the new board chair, taking over Michael Joseph effective August 1, 2022.

He resigned as director and board chair effective December 22, 2022, to take a role in developing green energy generation in Africa.

His exit followed key milestones achieved by the telecommunication company, including general election coverage, entry to Ethiopia and changes to Fuliza terms.
